Run for More: The Motschmann Brothers

Run for More: The Motschmann Brothers

15. 9. 2025 2 min. reading

Two brothers. Two paths. One shared finish line.

This is Chapter 3 of the Run for More series — a journey uncovering the purpose, passion, and perseverance that drive athletes beyond the stopwatch.

The story of Johannes and Lukas Motschmann began long before their first official race. As twins, they were rarely apart — running side by side, swapping playground victories, cheering each other on in football matches and bike rides. But when Johannes chose to pursue a career as a professional runner, their paths began to diverge.

From one starting line to two different journeys

University took them even further apart. Johannes moved to New York to compete at the highest collegiate level, while Lukas went to Hawaii with sporting ambitions of his own. Johannes thrived in structured training groups and elite competitions. Lukas realised that chasing times far from home didn’t bring the same joy.

When the pandemic hit, Lukas stepped away from competition — but not from running, and not from his brother’s journey.

Redefining what it means to be a team

After returning to Germany, Lukas shifted his focus. He launched a media agency, collaborated with adidas on community projects, and took on the role of Johannes’ manager. His mission wasn’t to demand faster times, but to create the space for Johannes to do the work only he could do.

From organising travel and logistics to cheering at the 20 km mark, Lukas’ presence became a new form of support — built on trust, understanding, and a lifetime of shared miles.

The marathon years

Four years ago, Johannes moved up to the marathon. His personal bests show huge potential, and now Berlin is on the horizon. Not just for a fast time, but for something greater — to race in
